CALLING ALL AFRICAN CHANGEMAKERS: Apply for the African World Heritage Youth Initiative 2026
Applications are open for the African World Heritage Youth Initiative, a new continental programme designed to support and equip young Africans who are passionate about heritage. This initiative targets youth between the ages of 18 and 35 who are currently studying or working in fields related to heritage, history, conservation, or closely related disciplines, and who wish to play an active role in safeguarding Africa’s cultural legacy.
The programme focuses on critical conversations around African heritage and World Heritage on the continent, examining how heritage intersects with sustainable development and long-term environmental responsibility. Participants will explore how historical forces such as colonialism and ongoing neo-colonial dynamics continue to shape heritage narratives today, while also engaging with themes of climate action, including pathways toward Net Zero and environmentally responsible heritage practices.
A strong emphasis is placed on community-led conservation and the value of intergenerational knowledge. Through shared dialogue and reflection, including exchanges inspired by elders’ wisdom, participants will engage with living heritage such as language, food systems, and cultural traditions, recognizing heritage as a dynamic and evolving part of everyday life.
The initiative is structured as an informal, collaborative learning space that prioritizes peer-to-peer exchange. Young people from across Africa will connect in a virtual environment to share experiences, learn from one another, reflect on challenges within the heritage sector, and strengthen their capacity as emerging Heritage Ambassadors.
The programme is delivered entirely online and brings together participants in pilot cohorts through interactive sessions, facilitated discussions, and shared learning activities. It is particularly suited to early-career professionals, students, volunteers, researchers, creatives, and activists who are engaged in or curious about heritage, culture, museums, archives, architecture, planning, climate action, and community development.
Interested applicants are invited to complete a short online application form, which takes approximately twenty minutes to fill out and focuses on personal background, areas of interest, and learning goals. Applications must be submitted by 16 January 2026
