CASH PRIZES: Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature Challenge (RAIN) 2025 is inviting applications from East African agriculture innovators!

Following two successful iterations of the Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge, the program is now entering its third phase with the support of the Shockwave Foundation and Munich Re Foundation. RAIN seeks to transform early-stage innovative agricultural concepts that address resilience challenges in East Africa into sustainable business models attractive to private investors and funding entities.

As a platform dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, RAIN focuses on helping communities in East Africa confront their unique challenges. The program first launched during COP27, with winners of its inaugural phase announced in January 2024. A second round followed at COP28, culminating in the announcement of winners in December 2024. Now, applications for the third phase are open, with the submission deadline set for January 31, 2025.

This phase aims to identify innovative, scalable, and nature-positive agricultural solutions that can attract investment while building resilience in ecosystems. These initiatives must address the needs of those most affected by climate shocks and stresses, with a strong emphasis on protecting biodiversity and promoting gender equality, equity, and human rights. The ultimate goal is to nurture and amplify impactful solutions, helping them thrive in the context of nature-positive agriculture.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations such as local civil society groups, public sector entities, international NGOs, and academic institutions. For-profit enterprises, farmers, and entrepreneurs operating within East Africa—covering Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda—are also encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates will benefit from tailored mentoring programs and communications support to sharpen their messaging and connect with potential funders. They will participate in an investor forum and have the opportunity to pitch their projects, either virtually or in person. Additionally, shortlisted candidates will engage in a leadership academy facilitated by experts to further develop their skills and strategies.

As part of their recognition, winners will receive a cash prize of up to $50,000 following the mentoring period and completion of the leadership academy. The initiative represents a transformative opportunity for agricultural innovators in East Africa to scale their ideas and create lasting impact in the fight against climate challenges.
