Applications are open for the AFRIKA KOMMT! Fellowship Programme, a prestigious fully funded initiative that brings together outstanding young professionals from across Africa for a one-year career and cultural development experience in Germany. The programme is designed to strengthen economic cooperation between Africa and Germany by equipping emerging African leaders with practical skills, international exposure, and strong professional networks. Selected fellows are placed in leading German companies, where they gain hands-on work experience, management training, and intercultural competence that prepares them to drive impact in their home countries and across global markets.

The fellowship is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with major German companies, with support from the German Federal Foreign Office. Since its launch, the programme has built a strong alumni network of African professionals who are contributing to sustainable development, innovation, and cross-continental partnerships.

Program Benefits

The AFRIKA KOMMT! Fellowship is fully funded and provides comprehensive financial and professional support throughout the programme. Fellows receive intensive German language training prior to and during their stay in Germany to ensure smooth integration into the workplace and society. The programme covers international travel costs to and from Germany, visa fees, accommodation, health insurance, and a monthly living stipend. In addition, fellows participate in high-level management training, networking events, and professional development workshops that enhance leadership and intercultural skills. The core component of the fellowship is an approximately eight-month practical placement within a leading German company, where fellows gain valuable industry experience and build long-term professional relationships. After returning home, fellows remain part of a vibrant alumni network that continues to offer professional engagement and collaboration opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be citizens of an African country and should possess a completed university degree in a relevant field. The programme is targeted at young professionals, typically with several years of work experience and a strong record of leadership, professional excellence, and commitment to development. Candidates are expected to demonstrate high motivation, clear career goals, and a willingness to actively engage in intercultural exchange. Strong English language skills are required, while German language knowledge is not mandatory at the time of application, as selected fellows will undergo intensive German language training before and during their stay in Germany. Applicants should also show readiness to return to their home countries after the fellowship to contribute to local and regional development.
