Applications are open for the AI in the Newsroom Fellowship 2026, an exciting fellowship designed for journalists, editors, and news content creators interested in exploring how artificial intelligence can transform journalism and newsroom practice. Organized by Africa Uncensored in partnership with DW Akademie, this six-month intensive fellowship aims to bridge journalism and emerging technologies by helping participants build practical AI-powered solutions for newsroom challenges. Fellows will develop innovative tools, workflows, and prototypes that can strengthen ethical, transparent, and impactful journalism.

Selected fellows will receive intensive technical upskilling, mentorship from editorial and technology experts, and access to a collaborative learning environment focused on practical innovation. Fellows will work on developing AI use cases, newsroom products, and editorial workflows that can be adopted in real journalistic settings. Participants will gain access to an AI sandbox, specialized tools, expert guidance, peer collaboration, and a strong professional network. The fellowship also offers valuable exposure to emerging practices in AI-powered journalism, helping participants strengthen both their technical capacity and leadership in media innovation.
Eligibility Criteria
This fellowship is open to journalists, editors, and news content creators who have a strong interest in AI-supported journalism and media innovation. Applicants should be able to identify a real challenge in their newsroom or journalistic work and propose how AI tools or workflows could help solve that challenge. Strong applicants are expected to demonstrate creativity, a problem-solving mindset, and commitment to responsible and ethical use of AI in journalism. Freelancers and newsroom professionals can apply, though applicants are generally expected to submit a letter of commitment from their newsroom, while freelancers may provide a personal commitment statement supporting their proposed project. Participants must also be available to commit fully to the fellowship from June through December 2026.
Eligible Countries
Open to applicants from African countries, with the fellowship primarily targeting journalists, editors, and news content creators working across Africa. The initiative has strong African regional relevance and welcomes applicants from across the continent who meet the eligibility requirements and can participate fully in the programme.
