FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Columbia University Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) 2027–2028

Applications are open for the Columbia University Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) for the Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 cohorts. Hosted by Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights, the program is designed to support experienced grassroots human rights advocates from around the world through a unique combination of academic engagement, professional development, mentoring, and networking opportunities. Participants will join a global community of changemakers and gain access to the resources of Columbia University and New York City’s vibrant human rights ecosystem. (humanrights.columbia.edu⁠)

Since its establishment in 1989, the Human Rights Advocates Program has welcomed more than 350 advocates from nearly 100 countries. Alumni have gone on to serve in governments, international organizations, universities, and leading civil society institutions, contributing to positive change in their communities and beyond. The program offers participants an opportunity to strengthen their advocacy skills, reflect on their work, and develop strategies for advancing human rights initiatives in their home countries. Participants will receive access to Columbia University’s academic resources, seminars, workshops, and mentoring opportunities. They will engage with leading scholars, policymakers, funders, and practitioners in the human rights field while building lasting professional networks. The Institute for the Study of Human Rights makes every effort to secure funding for shortlisted candidates, which may include support for travel, accommodation, and participation expenses, although funding availability may vary depending on donor support. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should be grassroots human rights advocates working with non-governmental organizations on issues such as gender-based violence, minority rights, labor rights, indigenous peoples’ rights, migration, environmental justice, disability rights, health, and social accountability. Candidates must demonstrate significant experience in the human rights field, strong commitment to advocacy, and the ability to undertake graduate-level studies. Fluency in English is required, while a bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory. Full-time students, academics, and government officials are generally not eligible. Applicants must also provide proof of institutional endorsement and commit to returning to their organizations after completing the program. (humanrights.columbia.edu⁠)

Eligible Countries

The Human Rights Advocates Program welcomes applications from qualified human rights advocates worldwide. Applicants from all regions are encouraged to apply, although preference is given to advocates from low- and middle-income countries and those who have had limited opportunities to study or travel internationally. Human rights defenders from Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and other underrepresented regions are particularly encouraged to submit applications. (humanrights.columbia.edu⁠)
