Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 East Africa AI and Digital Rights Advocates Program, an esteemed and fully sponsored regional initiative designed to empower legal professionals with advanced understanding and practical skills to uphold digital freedoms in East Africa. This program offers a vital platform for advocates to deepen their capabilities in areas where technology, law, and human rights intersect.

This training initiative is crafted to cultivate regional expertise in handling pressing legal concerns in the digital era, focusing on themes such as data privacy, online speech rights, transparency, algorithmic discrimination, surveillance practices, equitable access to digital tools, and evolving governance structures related to artificial intelligence. By engaging in this specialized course, participants will expand their competencies in navigating the legal intricacies posed by emerging technologies.

The core ambition of the program is to boost the ability of East African legal experts to champion civil liberties in the digital realm. Selected participants will be equipped with legal strategies to address policy challenges associated with surveillance, data regulation, and automated systems. The program also fosters a cooperative spirit among lawyers across the region by promoting cross-border engagement and knowledge-sharing. Through this regional collaboration, participants will be better positioned to lead impactful reforms and drive meaningful advocacy in their home countries.

Eligible candidates include practicing lawyers and legal professionals situated within East Africa who have a proven commitment to technology law, civil rights, or constitutional matters. Those selected must be available to fully participate in the entire training and demonstrate readiness to apply the lessons learned in real-world advocacy, litigation, or policymaking efforts.

This immersive learning experience will be facilitated by esteemed academics, judicial leaders, civil society figures, and tech policy experts. The curriculum spans foundational concepts of artificial intelligence and its implications within East African legal systems, personal data protections, digital surveillance, content moderation laws, litigation strategies for safeguarding online freedoms, and equitable legal access in the digital economy. Special focus will be given to the ethical development of AI technologies that respect human dignity, gender equity, and social inclusion, alongside a study of influential legal precedents from within and beyond the continent.

Participants accepted into the program will benefit from full financial sponsorship covering travel, lodging, and training materials. In addition to receiving a formal certificate upon completion, they will be introduced to an active professional network of digital rights practitioners, and offered further mentorship and potential roles in regional advocacy or legal reform initiatives.
