The East African Community Scholarships 2026–2027 have been announced, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities for talented students across East Africa. The programme aims to strengthen regional cooperation by enabling scholars to pursue postgraduate education in a partner country within the East African Community (EAC).
Supported by the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW Development Bank and coordinated by the Inter-University Council for East Africa, the scholarship is designed to nurture future professionals who will contribute to regional development, innovation, and integration.

Students are required to study in an EAC country different from their country of citizenship, encouraging academic mobility and intercultural exchange across the region.
Eligible Countries
Applicants must be citizens of one of the following EAC partner states:
- Uganda
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Rwanda
- Burundi
- South Sudan
Required Documents
Applicants are expected to prepare certified digital copies of:
- Academic degree certificates and transcripts
- Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Admission letter or proof of university application
- Passport, National ID, or birth certificate
- Passport-size photograph
- Motivation letter written in English
- Medical report and academic references
Application Process
The scholarship follows a two-step application pathway:
1. University Admission
Candidates first apply to an approved university within the EAC region, such as:
- Makerere University
- University of Nairobi
Applicants must secure admission in a host country different from their nationality.
2. Scholarship Submission
After initiating university admission:
- Download the scholarship form from the IUCEA portal
- Compile all required documents into a single PDF or ZIP file
- Submit via email to the designated scholarship addresses
- Follow the required subject-line naming format
Because university deadlines differ across institutions, candidates are advised to begin the admission process several months in advance.

Applications are evaluated based on:
- Academic excellence
- Relevance of proposed study field
- Motivation and leadership potential

Successful applicants receive comprehensive financial support covering:
- Full tuition fees paid directly to the host university
- Monthly living allowance of EUR 380
- One round-trip economy air ticket
- EUR 1,500 research and study grant
- Medical insurance throughout the study period
- Academic mobility support within the EAC region
This funding structure allows scholars to focus entirely on academic and research activities.
- Be under 35 years of age at the time of application
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with Upper Second-Class Honours or Distinction (or equivalent)
- Apply to a university outside their home country within the EAC
- Demonstrate strong English language proficiency
- Show commitment to regional development and cooperation
