Applications are open for the FRIAS Sustainable Governance Fellowship Africa 2027/28 hosted by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg, Germany. The fellowship seeks to support outstanding researchers from across Africa working in the humanities and social sciences with a focus on sustainable governance. Through a six-month residency, fellows will have the opportunity to pursue independent research, engage with an interdisciplinary academic community, and establish lasting collaborations with scholars at one of Germany’s leading universities.

The programme aims to strengthen research partnerships between Africa and the University of Freiburg while contributing to global conversations on governance and sustainability. Fellows will become part of an international network of academics and will benefit from a stimulating environment designed to promote excellence, innovation, and scholarly exchange.

Program Benefits

Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support throughout their six-month residency in Freiburg, Germany. This includes financial compensation through a fellowship contract or equivalent arrangement, reimbursement of travel expenses, and research cost contributions. Fellows will also gain access to office space, library facilities, administrative support, and assistance with accommodation and visa arrangements.

In addition, participants will join a vibrant community of researchers at FRIAS and become part of an international alumni network comprising more than 1,000 fellows from around the world. The programme offers a unique opportunity to expand professional networks, strengthen academic collaborations, and advance research on sustainable governance at a global level.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have completed a PhD and possess at least eight years of postdoctoral research experience by the time of application. Candidates should be affiliated with an academic institution in an African country and must have spent a minimum of six months studying or conducting research outside the country where they obtained their first academic degree. In addition, applicants are required to have obtained either a Master’s degree or a PhD from an institution in Africa.

Eligible candidates must demonstrate a strong publication record, with at least five peer-reviewed publications published since January 1, 2017. They must also submit a research proposal related to sustainable governance within the humanities or social sciences and secure a letter of cooperation from a professor at the University of Freiburg.

Eligible Countries

The fellowship is open to researchers currently based in all African countries. Scholars of any nationality may apply provided they are employed or affiliated with an academic institution on the African continent and meet all programme requirements.
