The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship offers substantial financial support to help scholars focus on their academic and professional development. In addition to monthly financial assistance, scholars gain access to seminars, workshops, mentoring programs, networking events, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. The program also promotes international exchange and leadership development, enabling participants to engage with experts, policymakers, and fellow scholars from diverse backgrounds. Applicants must have an excellent academic record and demonstrate active involvement in social, political, environmental, or community activities. International applicants must have completed their first university degree and be planning to begin a Master’s degree program in Germany, or have completed a graduate degree and be applying for a PhD program in Germany. Students from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply. Priority is often given to applicants from DAC-listed developing countries who have not yet established residence in Germany. Applicants must also demonstrate a strong commitment to the values promoted by the foundation, including sustainability, democracy, human rights, and social justice.

International applicants are required to provide proof of German language proficiency. A minimum German language level of B2 or DSH II is generally required to qualify for the scholarship. Applicants must also secure admission or be in the process of obtaining admission to a state-recognized German university.

Applicants from all countries may apply. However, priority is given to candidates from DAC-listed developing countries who are applying to pursue Master’s or PhD studies in Germany.
