FULLY FUNDED: Apply For The IOC PhD Students and Early Career Academics Research Grant Programme 2027

Applications are open for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Studies Centre PhD Students and Early Career Academics Research Grant Programme 2027. This prestigious global research initiative is designed to support emerging scholars conducting academic research on the Olympic Movement, Olympism, the Olympic Games, athletes, and the broader social, cultural, historical, and political impact of sport in society. The programme is organized annually by the IOC Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) and aims to encourage high-quality humanities and social sciences research connected to Olympic studies.  

Since the programme was established in 1999, more than 140 researchers from across the world have received grants to advance their studies and access the unique collections of the Olympic Studies Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. The initiative provides scholars with opportunities to engage with IOC historical archives, academic publications, and Olympic research materials while contributing to global academic discussions surrounding sport and Olympism.

Program Benefits
Selected grant recipients will receive financial support to conduct their research projects and, where relevant, may be supported to visit the IOC Olympic Studies Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. Scholars will gain access to extensive Olympic-related collections, including historical archives, image archives, and the Olympic World Library containing thousands of academic and official publications related to sport and Olympism.

Participants will also benefit from international academic recognition, networking opportunities with global Olympic scholars, and exposure to a prestigious research ecosystem supported by the International Olympic Committee. The programme helps researchers strengthen their academic careers while contributing valuable scholarship to Olympic and sports studies globally.
Eligibility Criteria
The programme is open to current postgraduate students enrolled in PhD degree programmes within the humanities and/or social sciences whose research focuses on Olympism, the Olympic Movement, or the Olympic Games as one of the core themes of their academic work. Applicants must already have a clearly developed research framework, including literature review, theoretical grounding, and methodology related to their proposed study.

The opportunity is also open to Early Career Academics, including academic staff members and postdoctoral fellows who completed their doctorate or equivalent highest qualification in or after 2023. Early Career Academic applicants must hold a valid academic or research appointment that covers the duration of the grant period. Research proposals from a wide range of disciplines connected to Olympic studies and contemporary society are encouraged.
Eligible Countries
The programme is open globally to eligible PhD students, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and early career academics from all countries worldwide.
