FULLY FUNDED: Apply For The JournalismAI Skills Lab 2026 for Journalists and Media Professionals Worldwide

Applications are open for the JournalismAI Skills Lab 2026, a fully virtual and free international programme designed to help journalism professionals gain practical skills in artificial intelligence, generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and AI-powered newsroom innovation. The programme is organized by JournalismAI at Polis, the journalism think tank of the London School of Economics and Political Science, with support from the Google News Initiative.  

The Skills Lab goes beyond basic prompt engineering by helping participants learn how to design and build AI-powered newsroom tools, workflows, prototypes, and proofs-of-concept that can improve journalism practice and editorial operations. The programme is intended for professionals working at the intersection of journalism and technology, including reporters, editors, product teams, visual journalists, and data specialists.

Program Benefits
Selected participants will receive free advanced training in generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, and newsroom innovation through a live instructor-led virtual learning environment. The programme combines lectures, workshops, laboratory sessions, and practical exercises to ensure that participants gain hands-on experience in developing newsroom AI tools and prototypes.

Participants will also benefit from mentorship and instruction by leading AI and journalism experts including Jenny Romano and Pedro Henriques. The programme offers opportunities to collaborate with journalism professionals from different regions of the world and build international professional networks focused on responsible AI implementation in media.

In addition, JournalismAI provides financial support for selected participants to purchase the technology, software, and tools required to complete their projects. Certificates of participation are awarded to participants who successfully complete the programme requirements, and outstanding participants may receive financial awards to continue developing their projects.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants from all countries are welcome to apply. The programme is intended for individuals working in journalism and media-related technology roles, including reporters, editors, copyeditors, product professionals, visual editors, and data journalists. Candidates should already possess some understanding of how AI systems are being used in journalism and newsroom environments.

Ideal candidates are expected to have basic numeracy skills and some familiarity with Python programming. However, applicants who are still learning Python may also apply provided they are willing to complete prerequisite learning before the programme begins. Participants must also secure a letter of support from their news organization confirming that they can dedicate sufficient time to the programme during the course period. Stable internet access and the ability to commit approximately seven hours per week are also required.

Independent journalists who are not affiliated with a news organization are currently not eligible to participate. Likewise, professionals who are already highly advanced in AI implementation and are simply seeking incremental improvements to existing sophisticated AI systems may not be considered suitable candidates for the programme.
