FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the MFWA Training Workshop on Critical Coverage of Africa–China Trade, Investment & Political Relations for Journalists in Anglophone West Africa

Applications are open for the 2026 Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Training Workshop on Critical Coverage of Africa–China Trade, Investment & Political Relations. Organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa in partnership with the Wits Centre for Journalism, this fully funded three-day capacity-building workshop is designed to strengthen journalists’ understanding of the evolving relationship between Africa and China. The workshop will equip participants with the knowledge and practical reporting skills needed to produce balanced, in-depth, and evidence-based stories on issues such as trade, investment, infrastructure, governance, development, and international cooperation.

The training, themed “Building Capacity to Cover a Complex Story – Africa and China Relations,” will be held in Accra, Ghana, during the last quarter of 2026. Participants will engage with experts, expand their professional networks, and gain valuable insights into reporting on one of the most significant geopolitical relationships affecting the African continent today. Outstanding participants may also receive additional opportunities to access reporting grants and participate in international journalism events.

Program Benefits
The workshop is fully funded, meaning all major participation costs will be covered by the organizers. Selected participants will receive a return economy-class flight ticket, accommodation throughout the training, meals, and local transportation in Ghana.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to apply for reporting grants to support the production and publication of high-quality stories on Africa–China relations. Three outstanding journalists may also be selected for a fully funded opportunity to participate in the Africa Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) in Kenya, where they will present their reporting.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be journalists based in an Anglophone West African country. Eligible countries include Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. Applicants should be actively working in print, radio, television, or digital media and regularly report on topics such as politics, business, trade, the economy, development, infrastructure, extractive industries, the environment, or international affairs.

Candidates should also be available to participate fully in the workshop during the last quarter of 2026 (September–October) and be able to obtain formal permission from their editor or employer to attend. Participants are expected to produce in-depth journalistic stories related to Africa–China relations after completing the training.
