Applications are open for the Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellowships 2026–2027, a prestigious global opportunity designed to support journalists investigating the societal impacts, risks, and accountability challenges associated with artificial intelligence technologies. The fellowship aims to empower journalists with financial support, mentorship, editorial guidance, and professional resources to produce in-depth investigative reporting on AI systems and their influence across different sectors of society.
The fellowship will run remotely for approximately ten months, from September 2026 to July 2027, and is open to both freelance and staff journalists from around the world. Selected fellows will receive funding of up to $25,000 to support ambitious reporting projects that examine how AI technologies affect governance, labor, surveillance, climate, public services, human rights, media, and social justice. Fellows will also become part of a global network of investigative journalists and experts working to improve transparency and accountability in AI systems.
The Pulitzer Center is particularly interested in projects that uncover hidden impacts of artificial intelligence, including discrimination and bias in automated systems, environmental effects of AI infrastructure, the use of AI in policing and border control, labor exploitation within AI supply chains, misinformation, algorithmic governance, and the role of governments and corporations in shaping AI policies and practices globally.

Fellows will also benefit from personalized mentorship, editorial guidance, legal and public-records support, specialized training opportunities, and access to a global network of journalists and experts focusing on AI accountability reporting. The fellowship further provides opportunities for collaboration, peer learning, and public engagement aimed at increasing awareness of the social impacts of artificial intelligence technologies.
The program is fully funded and designed to help journalists produce impactful stories that contribute to public understanding, policy discussions, and accountability regarding the development and deployment of AI systems worldwide.
Applicants are expected to submit a detailed reporting proposal demonstrating originality, relevance, feasibility, and potential public impact. Strong applications should clearly explain the significance of the investigation, the reporting methodology, anticipated challenges, and how the reporting will contribute to greater transparency and accountability around artificial intelligence technologies. Journalists should also demonstrate the ability to complete a substantial reporting project during the fellowship period.
In addition, applicants are required to provide writing samples, a budget proposal, references, and a letter of support from an editor or newsroom partner willing to publish or support the reporting project. Collaborative and cross-border reporting projects are also encouraged.
