Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be 30 years of age or younger on the date specified by the competition rules. They must be from, or currently working in, a country with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of USD 20,000 or less, as defined by the World Bank. Journalists working outside their home country are also eligible, provided they are reporting from another country that meets the same GNI requirement.

Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of three published or broadcast stories produced during the 12 months preceding the application deadline. Entries may be in print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of these formats. If the work is not in English, applicants must provide an accurate English translation. Each story should be accompanied by a summary of no more than 200 words explaining the story and its impact. Applicants must also submit a verification letter from their editor or, for freelancers, an appropriate referee confirming the authenticity of the submitted work. (Thomson Foundation⁠)
Eligible Countries
