Applications are open for the TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa 2026, a fully funded opportunity designed to strengthen scientific collaboration between researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa and Germany. The programme is jointly offered by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). It aims to promote sustainable research partnerships by supporting short-term visits of African scientists to German research institutions.

This programme provides selected researchers with the opportunity to establish or deepen collaborative research links with counterparts in Germany. Through these visits, participants can work on joint research projects, exchange scientific expertise, and strengthen long-term institutional cooperation. The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme is fully funded. It covers international travel expenses between the home country and Germany and provides subsistence support during the research stay. The financial support is intended to facilitate short-term research visits that contribute to long-term scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Beyond financial assistance, the programme offers participants the opportunity to build lasting research partnerships with German institutions, access advanced research facilities, and enhance their scientific output through joint publications and project development. The collaboration established during the visit is expected to foster sustained academic cooperation and strengthen research capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be nationals of and currently living and working in a Sub-Saharan African country. They should hold a research position at a recognized university or research institution in Sub-Saharan Africa and must have obtained a PhD in a field of the natural sciences. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an active research profile and a strong record of scientific publications in internationally recognized journals.

Applicants must identify a host scientist in Germany who is willing to collaborate and provide an invitation letter outlining the planned joint research activities. The programme is open to researchers in eligible fields within the natural sciences, and applicants must meet the academic and professional requirements set by TWAS and DFG. Researchers from North African countries are not eligible under this specific programme, as it is strictly dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa.
