Selected scholars will receive up to USD 75,000 in pilot funding to support the design and implementation of early-stage RCTs in agriculture. The program provides intensive training workshops, refresher courses, and access to J-PAL’s MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy. Scholars are paired with experienced J-PAL researchers for mentorship, gaining guidance in research design, implementation, and professional development.

Additional benefits include networking opportunities, participation in peer cohorts, exposure to high-level policy discussions, and the chance to present findings within the J-PAL and UJALA network. Scholars also gain visibility and recognition as part of a global research community focused on policy-relevant evidence.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a related empirical discipline, and demonstrate strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in Stata or R. Candidates should have advanced proficiency in English and a proven interest in development economics, impact evaluation, and randomized controlled trials with a focus on agriculture.

Eligible applicants include resident scholars based at African academic institutions, and non-resident scholars who completed high school in Africa but are currently based at academic institutions abroad. Priority is given to applicants affiliated with UM6P, those who have worked with OCP-related entities, and scholars who are not current J-PAL affiliates. Applicants must commit to full participation in program activities including workshops, proposal development, and mentorship.
