Participants selected for the International Law Seminar benefit from a unique opportunity to engage directly with the work of the International Law Commission and the broader United Nations legal system. They attend live sessions, lectures, and discussions led by top international law experts, gaining insights into the codification and progressive development of international law.

The programme also offers exceptional networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with peers, UN officials, and leading scholars from diverse legal systems and cultural backgrounds. This exposure significantly enhances participants’ academic and professional profiles, especially for those pursuing careers in international organizations, academia, or global legal practice.

While participation in the seminar itself is free, the United Nations may offer a limited number of fellowships to support participants from developing countries with travel and living expenses, depending on available funding. 

This opportunity is open to applicants from all United Nations Member States worldwide, making it a highly competitive global programme. Candidates must be postgraduate students in international law, young scholars, government officials, or early-career legal practitioners who are actively working or specializing in the field of international law.

Applicants are required to demonstrate a strong and comprehensive understanding of public international law, either through advanced academic studies or relevant professional experience. The seminar is not suitable for beginners, so candidates must already possess solid legal knowledge and analytical skills in this area.

Additionally, applicants must typically be between the ages of 24 and 38 at the time of the seminar. They should also have a good working knowledge of at least two official UN languages, particularly English and French, to fully participate in lectures and discussions. 

This opportunity is open to applicants from all United Nations Member States worldwide, making it a truly global programme. Candidates from any country are eligible to apply, provided their country is a member of the United Nations.

This means that applicants from across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania can participate. Countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, India, Brazil, and many others are all eligible.

The programme also places particular emphasis on ensuring geographical diversity and typically offers fellowship support to participants from developing countries to promote inclusive global representation.
