FULLY FUNDED : Apply for the HSRC Science Diplomacy Summer School 2025 For African Changemakers

Applications are open for the Science Diplomacy Summer School 2025, organised by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in collaboration with several African and international partners. This unique programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of African researchers, policymakers, and diplomats to engage in science diplomacy at both national and international levels. The summer school will provide participants with the knowledge, tools, and networks to navigate the complex space where science, policy, and global cooperation meet.

Program Benefits
Participation in the programme is free of charge for all selected candidates. In addition, there is limited support available to assist with travel and accommodation expenses for participants traveling from outside South Africa, depending on availability of funds. However, applicants should note that personal costs such as visa fees, medical expenses, and incidental items will not be covered by the organisers. Beyond financial support, the summer school offers immense intellectual and professional benefits. Participants will have the chance to interact with leading scholars, policymakers, and diplomats, build networks across Africa and globally, and develop practical skills in science-policy engagement and negotiation.
Eligibility Criteria
The programme is open to a wide range of participants working in the field of science and policy. Eligible applicants include early- to mid-career researchers in both the natural and social sciences who are based in Africa and are committed to advancing science-informed policy or international collaboration. Policymakers and government officials engaged in international cooperation and evidence-based policymaking across the continent are also encouraged to apply, as are members of the diplomatic community who work at the interface of science and policy. All applicants are expected to demonstrate a clear interest in science diplomacy and the ability to contribute meaningfully to discussions and activities during the school.
