Applications are now open for the 2025 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award, a prestigious opportunity that celebrates excellence in African journalism. This annual award, now in its tenth year, pays tribute to the legacy of Komla Dumor, a renowned Ghanaian broadcaster and former BBC World News presenter whose passion for telling authentic African stories left an indelible mark on global audiences. The award seeks to uphold his dedication to highlighting the diverse narratives of Africa through dynamic and impactful storytelling.

The opportunity is open to journalists currently residing and working in Africa who have demonstrated exceptional skill in reporting. Applicants must possess outstanding journalism capabilities across digital and social media platforms. While broadcasting experience is an added advantage, candidates with a strong on-air presence and the ability to engage audiences on camera or behind the microphone are highly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should be able to identify and propose original story ideas about Africa, aligning with the BBC’s editorial guidelines. A comprehensive understanding of the African continent’s political, cultural, economic, and social landscape is essential, along with fluency in English at a first-language or equivalent level.

The selected journalist will spend three months working with the BBC in London, gaining valuable hands-on experience across various platforms, including television, radio, podcasts, and online media. The placement will provide training, mentorship, and an opportunity to research, produce, and report a story from Africa, which will be broadcast to BBC’s global audience. The BBC will cover the winner’s round-trip flights to the UK, visa expenses, and accommodation during the placement period. Additionally, the winner will receive a basic journalist salary for the three months, subject to taxes and deductions.
