FULLY FUNDED TO CHINA: Apply for the AI for SDGs global AI future competition 2025 for AI innovators
The UNU Global AI Network has officially launched the 2025 edition of its international youth innovation challenge: the AI for SDGs – Global Youth AI Future Innovation Competition. This global initiative is designed to inspire technological creativity among young minds by encouraging the development of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that address sustainable development goals. With an emphasis on promoting youth-led social innovation and tackling environmental challenges, the programme seeks to build bridges between innovation, development, and real-world impact.
Each annual edition of the competition will focus on a central theme, offering multiple tracks that reflect different aspects of the overarching issue. The debut theme for 2025 is centered on “AI for the Environment,” exploring how artificial intelligence can offer solutions to pressing ecological and sustainability concerns. The competition tracks include climate resilience, biodiversity and natural resource protection, renewable energy advancement, and support for under-resourced regions through accessible AI solutions.
Submissions are expected to be highly innovative and technologically mature, with a readiness level above TRL 6—signifying that the technology has passed lab testing, is viable for real-world use, and is nearing market readiness. Selected entries should demonstrate clear practical value, innovation, and market potential. Those who excel in the competition will receive substantial support, including funding, global exposure, and opportunities for piloting their solutions in China. Winning teams will also be introduced to potential partners in the tech and investment sectors to help scale their ideas into impactful, deployable technologies.
A special prize will be awarded to outstanding participants from Macau, recognizing the region’s role in encouraging youth involvement in environmental innovation and sustainable development. The initiative welcomes participants from across the globe—whether individuals, startups, or established organizations. All projects must be submitted in English, and no fees will be charged for registration or participation. Proposals from enterprises must originate from companies that are less than a decade old, ensuring a focus on emerging and agile innovators.
