FULLY FUNDED TO HIROSHIMA, JAPAN: Apply for the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security 2025

Applications are open for the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security 2025, an incredible opportunity for young changemakers from around the world to come together and work toward building peace in a time of global uncertainty. This unique program, organized by Hiroshima Prefecture in collaboration with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is designed to nurture global leaders who are committed to creating a more peaceful and secure world.

This year’s theme, “Building peace in times of change,” resonates deeply as conflicts rage across the globe, international law is often disregarded, and the threat of nuclear weapons continues to loom large. Participants will gain a profound understanding of these urgent issues while learning from the powerful lessons of Hiroshima, the city that endured the first nuclear attack in history 80 years ago. They will engage with atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha), diplomats, experts, UN officials, activists, and fellow young leaders to explore solutions for a sustainable and peaceful future.

The Academy will be conducted in three parts: online learning and webinars from July to August 2025, an in-person session in Hiroshima from October 14 to 18, and a final online reflection session on November 8. The online segment offers flexibility, allowing anyone with a strong interest in nuclear disarmament and global security to participate, regardless of age. For the Hiroshima session, around 20 participants will be selected—half from nuclear-armed states and half from non-nuclear-armed states—highlighting the program’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Hiroshima Prefecture is offering full support for travel, meals, accommodation, and fieldwork expenses, making this a truly accessible opportunity.

Participants are expected to be proactive, passionate, and open to diverse perspectives. The program seeks those with a vision for contributing to global peace, whether as future diplomats, UN or NGO staff, or leaders in their communities. Fluency in English is essential, as discussions will delve into technical and humanitarian aspects of nuclear weapons, the social and environmental impacts, nuclear deterrence, and strategies for peace-building.

Applicants are invited to bring curiosity, empathy, and a readiness to engage with challenging topics. While prior knowledge of nuclear issues is not mandatory, a strong desire to learn is. The Academy’s interactive format, which combines testimonies, expert lectures, and peer exchange, promises to be a transformative experience for those who want to make a difference.

If you’re a student or young professional aged 25 or under, or even if you simply wish to participate in the online learning and webinars, don’t miss this chance to deepen your understanding of nuclear disarmament and contribute to a world free of nuclear weapons. Applications are open until June 1, 2025, Japan Standard Time. Take the first step today towards becoming a catalyst for peace in a world that needs your leadership.
