The African Young Women Leaders (AfYWL) Fellowship Programme is a joint initiative by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This 12-month fellowship aims to empower young African women to drive sustainable development through strategic leadership, policy engagement, and innovative solutions aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063.
Key Features:
- Global Exposure: Fellows will be placed at UNDP HQ in New York or regional/country offices, engaging in impactful projects without hardship duty stations.
- Leadership Development: Fellows will gain hands-on experience in UNDP’s six strategic impact areas: Natural Resource Governance, Youth and Women’s Employment, Structural Economic Transformation, Sustainable Energy, Climate Change, and Peace and Security.
- Professional Growth: Fellows will benefit from structured supervision, mentorship, and training, including a joint induction programme and access to a dedicated learning budget.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct data collection, analysis, and research on SDGs and Agenda 2063.
- Draft research papers, reports, and presentations.
- Support gender, youth, climate change, and resilience projects.
- Participate in field missions, stakeholder engagement, and high-level meetings.
- Collaborate on innovation initiatives within the UNDP impact areas.
Location: UNDP HQ (New York) or regional/country offices (excluding hardship locations)

Program Benefits
Stipend: Monthly allowance to support accommodation and basic living costs
Eligibility Criteria
Education: Master’s degree or equivalent in Economics, Political Science, Business Administration, International Relations, Law, Communications, Digitalization, or related fields.
Experience: Maximum two years of relevant paid experience (post-bachelor’s or master’s) in research, analysis, project development, or management.
Age Limit: Under 30 years at the date of application.
Language: Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in an additional AU working language (Arabic, French, Portuguese, or Spanish) is an advantage.
Citizenship: Open to nationals of African Union member states.
Availability: Willingness to relocate and work outside the country of residence for 12 months.
