FULLY FUNDED TO SOUTH KOREA AND THE UNITED STATES: Apply for the Asia Foundation Development Fellowship for Asian changemakers under 40!
Applications are open for the Asia Foundation Development Fellows program, a vibrant and comprehensive learning initiative aimed at nurturing exceptional individuals under 40 from Asia and the Pacific. The program is designed to strengthen leadership capabilities, deepen knowledge of development in the Asia-Pacific region, expand professional networks, and provide international exposure. It builds on The Asia Foundation’s seven decades of investing in the region’s most promising emerging leaders.
The program is divided into two major components. In Spring 2026, from April 19 to 25 in Korea, fellows will participate in a Leadership Training Program and Study Tour. This segment features highly interactive modules led by executive coaches, complemented by site visits to meet distinguished development practitioners, policy experts, and local innovators. Fellows engage in practical assignments and sessions that emphasize self-awareness and wellbeing for leaders. Training focuses on enhancing strategic thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, managing change, and fostering innovative leadership approaches. The site visits offer participants the opportunity to observe real-world solutions to development challenges, using local contexts as a backdrop for learning about effective strategies in international development.
In Fall 2026, from September 28 to October 7 in the United States, the Leadership Dialogue and Exchange Program continues the development journey, allowing fellows to strengthen connections within their cohort and gain broader international perspectives. During this period, they will engage in extensive programs, policy discussions, and unique learning experiences designed to further enhance leadership skills and professional growth.
Each selected fellow will also receive a Professional Development Award of up to USD 2,500, enabling them to pursue personalized opportunities to advance their skills and experience. This could include enrollment in specialized courses, participation in regional forums, language study, or other enrichment activities aligned with their career objectives.
The program provides tailored mentorship and executive coaching, leveraging The Asia Foundation’s extensive regional network. Fellows are offered one-on-one coaching sessions and mentorship matched to their professional background and interests, supporting their leadership growth throughout the fellowship year.
Eligibility criteria require candidates to have a proven record of accomplishment in fields aligned with The Asia Foundation’s focus, including governance, economic development, women’s empowerment, environmental resilience, education, leadership, and international cooperation. Fellows must demonstrate commitment, thoughtfulness, and the ability to inspire within their professional sphere and broader community. Applicants must be under 40 years of age by January 1, 2026, proficient in English, and available for all program activities. They must also be able to obtain a visa to the United States and be nationals or residents of countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Islands, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam.
