FULLY FUNDED TO THE UK: Apply for the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2025/26 for young and mid-career professionals
Applications are currently open for the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships, a unique opportunity aimed at experienced professionals from low- and middle-income Commonwealth nations. This initiative allows selected individuals to engage in a structured professional development programme by spending time at a host institution in the United Kingdom that operates within their area of expertise. The purpose of the fellowship is to enhance the participants’ skills and knowledge through practical exposure rather than academic research.
To qualify for the programme, applicants must hold citizenship in a Commonwealth country that meets the eligibility criteria, or they must have refugee status granted by such a nation, or be a British Protected Person. They must also reside permanently in an eligible Commonwealth country. Applicants are expected to have accumulated a minimum of five years of substantial, full-time experience (or its part-time equivalent) in a relevant professional field by the time the fellowship begins. Experience gained through voluntary roles does not count towards this requirement.
Applicants must currently be employed and should plan to return to the same employer after completing the fellowship. References are a mandatory part of the application process, with one reference required from the applicant’s present employer. Applications that are missing references will be deemed ineligible. Individuals who have already participated in a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship in the past five years are not allowed to reapply. Moreover, this fellowship is not designed for those intending to pursue academic studies or research. While professionals in academia may apply, their proposed activities must be focused on academic leadership or institutional management, not scholarly research. Selected applicants must also be ready to start their fellowship on the date specified by the organisers.
The fellowship package includes various financial benefits to support participants during their stay in the UK. These include the cost of a round-trip flight from the fellow’s home country, reimbursement for a standard UK visa, and a monthly stipend. For fellows based outside London, the stipend is £2,104 per month, while those placed in the London metropolitan area receive £2,612 per month, according to the 2024/25 financial year rates. Fellows who report a disability will undergo a detailed assessment to determine any additional support they may require, in line with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s policies on disability inclusion.
In addition to the monthly allowance, fellows will receive an arrival grant of up to £1,183.20, which also covers expenses for cold-weather clothing. Host institutions may also allocate up to £2,000 per fellow for attending short-term courses, professional conferences, or travelling to visit other organisations within the UK, provided these activities are essential to the learning experience and adhere to the financial guidelines laid out by the Commission.
