Applications are open for the 2027 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, a prestigious international opportunity designed for journalists reporting on human rights and social justice issues. The fellowship is administered by the International Women's Media Foundation and honors the legacy of Elizabeth Neuffer, a correspondent known for her courageous reporting on human rights and global conflicts.
The programme provides a unique professional and academic experience in the United States, allowing one selected journalist to expand their reporting skills while engaging with leading media and academic institutions.
The application deadline is 19 April 2026.
About the Fellowship
The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship is designed to support journalists who demonstrate a strong commitment to covering human rights, gender issues, and social justice. The selected fellow will spend several months in the United States participating in academic research and hands-on newsroom experience.
During the fellowship period, participants will undertake research and coursework at the MIT Center for International Studies while also completing a professional internship at the renowned newsroom of The Boston Globe.
In previous years, fellows also spent time at The New York Times as writing fellows, although future placements are currently being arranged for the June–July portion of the 2027 programme.

June 2026: Selection of the Neuffer Fellow

February – May 2027: Fellowship begins in Boston, including coursework and research at MIT and a newsroom internship with The Boston Globe

June – July 2027: Additional fellowship placement (currently being finalized)

Additional Information
- A monthly stipend to cover living expenses
- Accommodation provided in Cambridge and New York City
- Round-trip economy airfare from the fellow’s home country to the United States
- Transportation costs between fellowship locations
- Health insurance coverage during the programme
- Visa application and processing costs covered for international fellows
- Applicants must identify as women, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming journalists
- A minimum of three years of full-time professional journalism experience is required
- Both staff journalists and freelancers are eligible
- Applicants must focus their reporting on human rights or social justice issues
- Candidates must demonstrate strong English reading, writing, and speaking skills
- Internships or journalism activities completed during university studies do not count toward the required professional experience.
