The Broadbent Institute started the Emerging Leaders Program in 2023 as a training program to cultivate leaders and organisers in their early to mid-career stages who are dedicated to building a more equitable and inclusive society. Emerging Leaders who complete the nine-month program will have the networks, mentorship, and abilities necessary to get ready for director-level responsibility.
Program Objectives
The Broadbent Institute’s Emerging Leaders Program aims to equip individuals driving systemic change with:
- Practical training
- Expert mentorship
- Opportunities for collaborative learning
- A curriculum centered on equity
These resources help Emerging Leaders enhance their skills and capabilities in developing progressive policies and initiatives. The program focuses on skill-building in areas such as:
- Leadership and communication within teams
- Effective strategies for organizing advocacy campaigns
- Business management, including strategic and financial decision-making
- Navigating government relations from both an insider and outsider perspective
- Engaging with stakeholders, consulting, and building consensus in communities
- Utilizing digital, social, and traditional media to communicate ideas and generate public support
As one of the last projects supported by founder Ed Broadbent before his passing in January 2024, the program seeks to shape the future of progressive leadership, continuing his legacy in the fight for justice and equality.
Program Structure
Over the course of the nine-month program (from March to November), Emerging Leaders receive ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities.
In-person events will take place during the 2025 Progress Summit in April and the 2025 Progress Gala in November. These events will offer exposure to best practices and specialized leadership workshops that provide practical tools to enhance leadership skills and expand networks.
In addition to these in-person events, the program features monthly virtual sessions, including workshops, panels, and Q&A discussions with experienced facilitators committed to advancing progressive leadership in Canada.
Interested individuals should apply by the deadline of February 7, 2025.
