CJIFA has unveiled its 2025 Community Empowerment Grant Program in Africa, an initiative designed to promote grassroots participation in climate action, awareness, and sustainable development. The program seeks to equip local organizations and community networks with the tools and resources needed to turn creative environmental ideas into real, impactful solutions. By connecting innovation to on-the-ground implementation, it aims to create meaningful change that resonates from local communities all the way to national and regional platforms.

Through its Small Grant Scheme, the program offers targeted financial support to high-impact, market-oriented climate finance projects in developing economies across the continent. It recognizes the vital role played by community-based organizations, civil society groups, and local NGOs in achieving significant results with limited resources. These grants are intended to help strengthen conversations on climate change, foster public engagement, and encourage communities to take an active role in shaping climate policies and solutions.

The initiative also emphasizes the importance of inclusive representation by uplifting the voices of women, young people, and marginalized populations. It aims to reinforce the capacity of local organizations to advocate for social, economic, and cultural rights, promote environmental justice, and uphold democratic values. By supporting creative and sustainable ideas, the program aspires to stimulate dialogue, enhance accountability, and mobilize both public and private sectors in addressing climate challenges.

Eligible organizations must be legally registered, independent of political, governmental, and religious affiliations, and must have been operating at the grassroots level for at least one to three years. Priority will be given to groups that are youth-led, women-led, or serving underrepresented communities, as well as those able to present innovative, sustainable, and inclusive projects. The selection process will focus on originality, potential for scalability, community engagement, and long-term viability, with particular attention to projects that integrate social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Grant awards will range between USD 5,000 and 8,000 for projects that can be completed within six to twelve months, with opportunities for renewal in subsequent years. Applicants are expected to design initiatives that build climate resilience while addressing broader social themes such as promoting good governance, advancing equality and inclusion, holding businesses accountable for environmental impacts, and fostering economic empowerment through skills development and market innovation. The overarching goal is to drive impactful, cost-effective, and sustainable action that strengthens the capacity of African communities to confront the climate crisis.
