Researchers and specialists in climate science and related disciplines are invited to submit nominations for membership in the Scientific Steering Group (SSG) of CLIVAR, a core research initiative of the World Climate Research Programme.

The call seeks experts who can contribute to advancing scientific understanding of climate variability, predictability, and long-term change. Successful candidates will join the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group beginning in January 2027 or January 2028, subject to approval by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee.

The Scientific Steering Group plays a key role in guiding CLIVAR’s global research agenda. Members help coordinate international research activities, strengthen collaboration across climate science programmes, and ensure that the project responds effectively to new scientific developments and emerging global climate challenges.

Areas of Expertise Sought

CLIVAR is particularly interested in experts with experience in the following fields:

• Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for climate applications

• Data assimilation and climate reanalysis, including seasonal to decadal forecasting

• Paleoclimate research, focusing on past climate variability and long-term climate processes

Experts who can bridge interdisciplinary knowledge and contribute to innovative climate research approaches are strongly encouraged to apply.

Role of the Scientific Steering Group

Members of the SSG help shape the strategic direction of CLIVAR by:

• Overseeing the implementation of CLIVAR research activities

• Supporting collaboration between CLIVAR and other WCRP core projects

• Contributing to international climate science initiatives and research priorities

• Ensuring that CLIVAR activities reflect current scientific developments and emerging research needs

The group also works closely with global partners involved in climate research and contributes to the broader goals of international climate science programmes.
