The Green Climate Fund, the world’s largest multilateral fund dedicated to climate finance, supports transformative projects in developing countries. With over 297 projects in 133 countries and USD 16.6 billion committed to date, GCF plays a pivotal role in global climate action. As part of its 2024–2027 strategic cycle, the Fund aims to grow its impact, with aspirations to become a USD 50 billion institution by 2030.
Position Summary
The Environmental and Social Specialist will be responsible for implementing the Fund’s Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) and associated policies. This includes assessing environmental and social aspects of funding proposals, ensuring compliance with gender and Indigenous Peoples policies, and supporting the integration of social sustainability across GCF operations. The role also includes providing technical support, conducting due diligence, and contributing to knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
Purpose
- Customize and apply the ESMS to ensure adherence to environmental, social, and gender inclusion policies.
- Assess and monitor projects for environmental and social risks, including subprojects and related activities.
Engagement
- Foster collaboration across internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure policy implementation and awareness.
- Advise Accredited Entities (AEs) and project teams on risk management and inclusion practices.
Delivery
- Improve and streamline due diligence and performance review processes to ensure policy compliance.
- Support consistent application of safeguards and manage grievance response mechanisms via the GCF Independent Redress Mechanism.

Additional Information
Minimum seven years of international experience in implementing environmental and social safeguards and policies.
Familiarity with gender mainstreaming, Indigenous Peoples inclusion, and use of environmental assessment tools.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects in dynamic, deadline-driven environments.
Experience with international funding agencies or organizations is a strong asset.
Fluency in English is required; proficiency in additional UN languages is a plus.
