Join the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF) 2026 as a fellow

Applications are now open for the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF) 2026, a pan-African leadership and capacity-building initiative aimed at preparing young climate leaders to actively participate in international climate governance and negotiations.

The fellowship serves as a structured learning journey that strengthens the technical expertise, negotiation capacity, and policy engagement skills of African youth interested in shaping climate decision-making processes at national, regional, and global levels — particularly within the United Nations climate negotiation framework.

About the Fellowship

The African Youth Negotiators Fellowship is designed to cultivate a new generation of African climate negotiators equipped to influence climate diplomacy and policy outcomes. Now entering its fifth cohort, the program continues to expand opportunities for young leaders across Africa to develop practical negotiation skills while gaining exposure to real-world climate governance systems.

The initiative is implemented by Green Africa Youth Organization in collaboration with Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network.

Through structured learning, mentorship, and engagement opportunities, participants build the confidence and competence required to represent African perspectives in global climate discussions.

Fellowship Structure

The program is delivered in three progressive phases:

Phase 1 — Foundational Online Learning

Applicants begin with mandatory online coursework through the Ghana Climate Literacy Portal. Participants must complete Climate Science 101 and submit a certificate of completion as part of the application process. Additional assignments or assessments may follow for shortlisted candidates.

Phase 2 — Hybrid Training in Ghana

Selected fellows participate in an intensive one-week hybrid training featuring:

  • Climate negotiation simulations
  • Policy writing sessions
  • UNFCCC architecture training
  • Regional climate policy analysis
  • Practical negotiation exercises

Phase 3 — Mentorship & COP Engagement

The final stage focuses on deeper professional development through:

  • Thematic negotiation laboratories
  • Policy brief development
  • Mentorship support
  • Coordinated engagement before, during, and after COP31 activities

Why This Fellowship Matters

The African Youth Negotiators Fellowship responds to the growing need for stronger African youth representation in global climate negotiations. By strengthening policy literacy and negotiation readiness, the program helps amplify youth voices and supports more inclusive climate decision-making across international platforms.
