The African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially opened applications for its 2025 Internship Program. Founded in 1964, the Bank stands as a leading pan-African financial institution committed to fostering economic advancement and social development throughout the continent. With 81 member nations, including 54 located in Africa, the Bank plays a key role in supporting regional growth. This internship initiative forms part of a larger Talent Management Framework that helps the institution achieve its Ten-Year Strategy and its transformative “High 5s” priorities. Selection for the program is highly competitive and is guided by the Bank’s current operational demands.

This internship initiative aims to provide graduate students with the opportunity to gain firsthand professional experience within a prestigious development finance organization. It also allows the Bank to identify and assess young professionals who may be considered for future employment, though participants should not anticipate automatic job placement following the program.

The internship targets individuals whose academic training aligns with the Bank’s areas of specialization. These include a broad spectrum of disciplines such as agriculture, finance, engineering, legal affairs, governance, procurement, risk analysis, sustainability, data science, economics, human resource management, IT, communications, and more. Preference is given to candidates whose academic work directly supports the Bank’s mission and development agenda.

The second round of the 2025 internship intake is scheduled to begin in July. Applicants must fulfill several conditions to be considered. They should be at least the legal adult age in their home country and not older than 30 years when the program begins. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a recognized postgraduate degree program or have graduated from one within the past year. Only nationals from the Bank’s member countries are eligible to apply. In addition, applicants must demonstrate fluency in either English or French, which are the Bank’s official working languages. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential, and familiarity with SAP software is seen as an asset. A letter from the applicant’s academic institution verifying their enrollment, or proof of recent graduation, must also be provided.

The internship duration will range from three to six months and can only be undertaken once by each selected individual. Depending on the specific needs of the department to which they are assigned, interns may work remotely or on-site. Those working remotely must have the necessary technology and a stable internet connection to effectively perform their duties. Interns based at the Bank’s physical offices will be responsible for their own travel and living costs, although the Bank will support them in acquiring any necessary travel or residence documentation. During the internship period, medical insurance will be provided, and interns will receive a monthly allowance.

The program’s focus areas reflect the Bank’s broader strategic goals, including its commitment to gender equality and inclusive development. Through this initiative, the Bank seeks to attract bright, motivated individuals whose studies and career aspirations align with key sectors critical to Africa’s sustainable growth and development.
