About the Fellowship

The fellowship places selected participants with partner organizations for a 10-week internship combined with cohort-based training. Fellows gain hands-on experience, professional development support, and access to a national network of climate and environmental professionals.

This programme is designed to prepare participants for long-term careers in environmental justice, sustainability, and climate action while addressing barriers such as limited access to green jobs, mentorship, and fair compensation.

Programme Duration

  • May 26 – August 2026 (rolling start dates depending on host organization)

  • Full-time commitment of 32–40 hours per week

  • In-person cohort retreat in mid-August 2026

Program Benefits
Participants selected for the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship will receive:

- A living wage stipend of $5,000

- A minimum hourly wage of $18 per hour

- An all-expenses-paid in-person retreat

Eligibility Criteria
- The fellowship is open to early-career women and gender-expansive individuals, particularly those who identify as Black women or gender-expansive people. Other women and gender-expansive applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Eligible applicants include:

Rising juniors and seniors

Recent undergraduate graduates (within two years)

First-year graduate students

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in environmental or climate-related fields. A formal environmental science background is not required, as the programme values commitment to equity, justice, and sustainability.

Applicants must be eligible to work and reside in the United States during the fellowship period.
