Applications are now open for a dynamic Advocacy and Research Internship with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). As the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, ICAN leads a global coalition of more than 700 civil society organisations across 100 countries in the urgent mission to outlaw and eliminate nuclear weapons. Since 2007, this passionate network has grown through public awareness campaigns, high‐level advocacy at the United Nations and national parliaments, and the powerful testimonies of survivors of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and nuclear testing. With its international headquarters in Geneva and a lean, dedicated team of 13 staff members worldwide, ICAN offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage directly in groundbreaking international disarmament work.

As an Advocacy and Research Intern, you will work closely with the Policy and Research Coordinator and the Advocacy Officer to explore the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons and support the full implementation of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Over a ten‐week period, you will gain hands‐on experience in policy research, international law, and advocacy communications. Your contributions will include assisting with ICAN’s annual global nuclear weapons spending report, updating an interactive map that illustrates the human and environmental consequences of nuclear detonations, and drafting briefing materials for campaigners, diplomats and media outlets. You will also help prepare commemorations of the 80th anniversaries of the first nuclear test and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, conduct outreach to parliamentarians and foreign ministries, and coordinate national campaigning efforts—particularly in Switzerland.

Ideal candidates are students or recent graduates with proven research and writing abilities, a keen interest in international law and nuclear disarmament, and the capacity to work independently and accurately under tight deadlines. While all applicants are welcome, ICAN particularly encourages candidates of colour, Indigenous applicants, those who identify as LGBQTI+SB, women or non-binary individuals, people with disabilities, and members of communities affected by nuclear weapons to apply. Preference will be given to those who can live and work in Switzerland for the duration of the internship.

The position offers a monthly stipend of CHF 3,400 at 80% full-time equivalent and the chance to immerse yourself in one of the world’s most influential disarmament campaigns.
