About the Internship

The Parliamentary Internship for the Environment is an immersive leadership program that places selected participants directly in the offices of Canadian Members of Parliament recognized for their work on environmental and sustainability issues.

Interns spend several months working within Parliament, gaining firsthand exposure to policymaking, legislative processes, and public service leadership.

Participants begin with an orientation program introducing Parliament operations, environmental policy landscapes, and cohort networking before placements start.

Internship Responsibilities

During their placement, interns may:

Conduct policy and legislative research
Draft briefing notes and background documents
Support parliamentary committee work
Communicate with constituents and stakeholders
Assist MPs during meetings and consultations
Participate in conferences, workshops, and leadership training

Interns also design community engagement activities that promote public participation in environmental governance.

Specialized Streams

The program may include focused learning pathways such as:

Indigenous Leadership Stream – supporting First Nation, Métis, and Inuit participants and strengthening Indigenous-led policy engagement.
Food Systems & Sustainable Agriculture Stream – advancing leadership related to agriculture, food systems, and rural environmental issues.
