Remote Volunteering : Apply For the Local Pathways Fellowship – 2026 Cohort
The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Youth Initiative (SDSN Youth) has opened applications for the 2026 cohort of its Local Pathways Fellowship (LPF), a global program designed to support young urban leaders who are driving progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Running from March to December 2026, the fellowship provides a structured platform for emerging changemakers to deepen their understanding of urban sustainability and contribute practical solutions in their local contexts.
Since its launch, the LPF has brought together young thinkers, community organizers, and innovators from cities worldwide. The program focuses on equipping fellows with the tools, mentorship, and international network needed to tackle urban challenges and advance more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities. SDSN Youth encourages applications from all regions and aims to maintain strong geographic diversity across the cohort.
Role Overview
Over ten months, fellows work through a guided process that helps them explore the complexities of urban development, reflect on local realities, and transform their learning into an actionable city-focused project. Each month features a core assignment or activity, encouraging fellows to:

Examine the major environmental, social, and economic issues currently facing cities—and the opportunities urban areas hold for global transformation.

Use the insights gained to design and refine a project aligned with the priorities of their own city, which becomes a key deliverable of the fellowship.

Engage with a global peer network of over 750 alumni across 180+ cities in 80 countries, creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Participate in webinar sessions and receive guidance from practitioners working in urban planning, policy, technology, development, and sustainability.

Duration: 10 months

Time requirement: 4–6 hours weekly

Supervision: Managed by the Local Pathways Fellowship team

Training: All selected fellows must complete SDSN Youth’s online induction and team training modules.

- Show background knowledge in fields such as urban planning, sustainability, environmental studies, urban technology, community engagement, advocacy, or related disciplines.
- Have at least one year of academic or professional experience connected to urban issues or community development.
- Be proactive communicators capable of working across time zones and maintaining consistent engagement with program activities.
- Possess strong organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills, along with a problem-solving mindset.
- Be fluent in English—spoken and written—and in the local language of the city they aim to represent.
- Be between 18 and 30 years old at the start of the fellowship.
- Have reliable access to the internet and the ability to dedicate the required time.
