VOLUNTEER ROLES: Apply for the African Union (AU) Internship Program 2025 for young African changemakers
Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 internship program offered by the African Union. As a Pan-African organization dedicated to fostering unity, cooperation, and sustainable development across the continent, the AU plays a crucial role in advancing Africa’s integration and progress. With its headquarters based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AU is committed to strengthening its institutional capacity to achieve its objectives effectively. As part of this effort, the African Union Commission invites individuals from member states to apply for this opportunity.
This internship program allows participants to complement their academic knowledge with hands-on experience, helping them develop essential professional skills. It is a full-time engagement designed for individuals from diverse educational backgrounds who are eager to gain exposure to the workings of the AU. The organization values diversity, teamwork, and cultural exchange and encourages those who are passionate about its mission to apply. Successful candidates should be interested in the AU’s work and be able to engage with people from different cultural and ideological backgrounds.
By participating, interns will have the chance to gain firsthand insight into the daily operations of the AU while enhancing their personal and professional competencies. This initiative also serves as a platform for nurturing future African leaders, providing them with practical experience across multiple fields in an intercultural environment. Interns contribute to various projects and programs within different AU departments, including those focused on governance, trade, peace and security, infrastructure, health, education, and resource management.
To be eligible for the program, candidates must be enrolled in at least the final year of a bachelor’s degree program or have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field. They must be citizens of an AU member state, currently studying full-time in their final year, and be no older than 32 at the time of selection. Fluency in at least one official AU language—Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese—is required. Additionally, applicants should possess high moral integrity, have no history of serious criminal offenses, and demonstrate proficiency in basic computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and internet usage. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are also necessary.
While this internship provides valuable experience, it is an unpaid opportunity, meaning participants are responsible for covering their travel, accommodation, and living expenses throughout the duration of the program. The AU will assist in facilitating visa arrangements where possible, but travel costs, medical insurance, and other related expenses must be managed by the interns themselves. Each internship lasts for three months, with the possibility of a one-time extension.
Those interested in applying must do so through the online application system. First-time users must create an account before logging in. It is recommended that applicants provide detailed and relevant information to strengthen their submission. Required documents include a motivation letter outlining expectations from the program, a valid passport or national identification card, certified copies of academic certificates, an updated curriculum vitae, and a recommendation letter from the institution they are currently attending. Upon submission, applicants will receive an email confirmation acknowledging receipt of their application.
