Funded : Apply for the Bertha Challenge Fellowship 2025
The Bertha Challenge Fellowship 2025 for Activists & Investigative Journalists is now accepting applications. This fellowship offers activists and investigative journalists the chance to dedicate a year to addressing a significant social justice issue and producing a substantial body of work by the end of the program.
Accepted fellows will receive paid fellowships and project funding to collaborate independently and collectively on the following objectives:
- Investigating the root causes of and potential solutions to the annual Bertha Challenge question
- Sharing their discoveries with a broader, specific audience
- Engaging with various stakeholders to gather information, gain support, and foster lasting change
The upcoming sixth installment of the Bertha Challenge, slated for January 2025, will center on agriculture and the climate emergency. Investigative journalists and activists are encouraged to submit applications for the Bertha Challenge Fellowship, proposing projects that address the following inquiry

Additional Information
- One year of income, up to USD $64,900, aligned with the fellow's current salary, ideally within a media outlet for journalists or an NGO/community organization for activists.
- A Project Fund of up to USD $10,000 per fellow to create a final product addressing the Bertha Challenge question, tailored to a specific audience.
- Access to a Connect Fund of up to USD $5,000 to facilitate collaboration among fellows.
- Regular online discussions covering various topics related to the Bertha Challenge, investigative methods, storytelling, and more.
- Peer and mentor support through virtual check-ins with Bertha staff and fellow cohort members.
- Networking opportunities within the global Bertha Fellows community and exposure to relevant partners.
- Participation in a global convening of Bertha Fellows at the beginning of the challenge.
- Minimum five years of experience in collaborating with activists, grassroots movements, and community organizations.
- Extensive networks within their city, country, or region, including relationships with social movements, NGOs, academics, journalists, and progressive government officials.
- Proficiency in creating organizing tools and educational materials like training courses, publications, films, podcasts, etc.
- Competence in utilizing research, media, and legal strategies for advocacy purposes.
Applicants for the fellowship should be mid-career investigative journalists with at least five years of experience and a notable history in investigative reporting. They should have demonstrated interest and prior involvement in tackling the Bertha Challenge question, showcasing their ability to collaborate with various stakeholders such as affected communities, social movements, NGOs, academics, and scientists. Proficiency in investigative journalism and research, coupled with a thorough grasp of the political dynamics and pertinent laws, is essential. Candidates should also possess the ability to work independently and have affiliation with a media outlet willing to publish or broadcast the outcomes of their work during the Bertha Challenge.
