CASH PRIZES: Apply for the 2026 Commonwealth Youth Awards for young changemakers

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work. This prestigious annual initiative, managed by the Commonwealth Youth Programme, aims to honour young changemakers between the ages of 15 and 29 from across Commonwealth nations who are leading transformative, community-driven projects that contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.

This youth recognition programme shines a light on individuals making significant contributions toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while advancing equity, peace, prosperity, and sustainability within their communities. By highlighting the real-world impact of these youth-led efforts, the awards inspire a culture of innovation, resilience, and dedication among young leaders and provide encouragement for the growth and support of grassroots solutions to global challenges.

Through celebrating these emerging voices, the programme also offers a global platform to showcase the talent, dedication, and creativity of youth across the Commonwealth. By sharing the stories of those nominated, the awards aim to motivate others, nurture a spirit of service and leadership, and encourage broader participation in development work at both local and international levels.

To qualify for the awards, applicants must be between 15 and 29 years old as of 31 December 2025, hold citizenship in a Commonwealth member state, and must have been actively involved in development work for a period exceeding 12 months—whether as volunteers or professionals. This work must be taking place within the Commonwealth, and nominations can be submitted either by the individuals themselves or by someone who can accurately represent their contributions.

Winners will be selected based on measurable community impact, creativity in addressing social issues, the scope and quality of their accomplishments, the strength of evidence supporting their work, and the long-term sustainability of their efforts. The selection process will identify finalists from each Commonwealth region, with one standout from each region being named a Regional Winner. From these, the most exceptional individual will be crowned Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2026 and awarded the Pan-Commonwealth Prize.

Each of the twenty regional finalists will be awarded a financial grant of £1,000, along with a commemorative trophy and certificate. Those chosen as Regional Winners will receive an additional £2,000—bringing their total prize to £3,000—while the Pan-Commonwealth Winner will be granted an extra £2,000 for a total prize of £5,000. These prestigious awards will be presented during Commonwealth Week in March 2026, placing the spotlight on outstanding youth-led initiatives and the importance of empowering young people in shaping a better world.
