Prize of €2,000 per challenge winner : Contest for the Waste Management Startups – Circular Economy Innovation Challenge 2026
An international innovation challenge is now open for startups developing practical solutions to improve urban waste management and recycling systems.
Launched by Ecoembes and TheCircularLab, this global open call seeks early-stage and growing companies working on disruptive technologies and business models that strengthen the circular economy and modernise waste management in cities.
The initiative connects innovative startups with leading organisations, public administrations, and industry experts, offering opportunities for pilot projects, funding, and international visibility.
Focus Areas and Challenges
Applicants are invited to present solutions addressing one of two core challenges:
Challenge 1 – Smarter Urban Waste Collection
Solutions that improve waste management from the moment citizens generate waste until it reaches sorting facilities. Priority areas include:

New selective collection systems (door-to-door, Pay-As-You-Throw, etc.)

Digital containers and smart storage technologies
-
Route optimisation and collection traceability tools
-
Citizen engagement and participation platforms
Challenge 2 – More Efficient Waste Sorting Plants
Technologies that improve operations inside recycling and sorting facilities, including:

Digital twins, dashboards, and plant monitoring systems

AI, blockchain, and IoT for operational control

Advanced waste separation and classification tools

Bale labelling and traceability solutions
Final Event & Pitch Opportunity
Eight finalist startups will be invited to present their projects at the Final Pitch & Networking Event during the Foro de las Ciudades 2026, held from 9 to 11 June 2026 at IFEMA Madrid.

Public authorities, private sector leaders, and innovation professionals
Finalists will showcase their solutions to decision-makers and institutions driving the transition toward greener cities.
Selection Process
The programme follows four stages:

Application Submission – Startups complete the online form and describe how their solution addresses one of the challenges

Finalist Selection – An expert committee reviews proposals and selects finalist teams

Final Pitch – Finalists present their projects at the Foro de las Ciudades

Proof-of-Concept Development – Selected startups may co-develop pilot projects in real environments
