Applications are now open for the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA) Creatives in Residence Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), an opportunity that brings African creative practitioners into closer engagement with academics and researchers working on social science and contemporary African issues.
The programme is designed to create space for artists and academics to collaborate, using creative practice to communicate research, explore complex social issues and reach audiences beyond traditional academic settings.
About the Programme
The Creatives in Residence Programme is hosted by the LSE Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa and offers creatives the opportunity to become part of the Institute's intellectual community for an initial one-year residency, with the possibility of renewal through future annual calls.
The programme recognises the role of Africa's creative industries in shaping public conversations and providing new approaches to understanding and communicating social science.
Residents may work with researchers and members of the Institute to develop projects that translate research and complex ideas into creative forms and accessible public-facing outputs.
Areas of Interest
Proposals may connect with the FLIA research themes, ongoing research projects, thematic programming or areas where the Institute identifies gaps.
Applicants may also develop proposals related to the five strategic themes of LSE.
The programme is also open to ideas beyond these areas. The Institute specifically notes reparations as one of the themes that applicants may consider in developing their proposals.
This gives creatives room to propose projects that reflect their own practice while engaging with important social, political, economic and cultural questions relating to Africa and its global connections.
Interested creatives are encouraged to prepare their portfolios and project proposals ahead of the deadline 7 October 2026.
The FLIA Creatives in Residence Programme 2026 offers African creatives a platform to connect artistic and creative practice with academic research while contributing new ways of communicating ideas about Africa and wider social science issues.

Successful applicants will become affiliated with the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa for an initial one-year term.

Successful applicants must be able to spend time in London in order to participate in and integrate into the intellectual community of the Institute.

- Working within the creative sector or able to demonstrate relevant creative practice
- Interested in developing a project that connects creative practice with social science, research or wider public engagement
- Applicants are expected to demonstrate their creative work through previous examples and present a clear proposal for the project they would undertake during the residency.
