SFU's Open Call: Join the COP 28 Delegation to Dubai
SFU is extending an invitation to students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members actively involved in climate action to apply for a position in SFU's delegation to COP 28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The delegation will participate in the international climate negotiation process, foster climate-focused discussions and initiatives, and establish connections and collaborations with individuals from various countries. The event will take place from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
ELIGIBILITY FOR JOINING SFU'S COP 28 DELEGATION TO DUBAI
Who is eligible?
SFU degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members are invited to apply. While some badges will be reserved for SFU, the majority will be distributed through this open call to ensure inclusivity and support for delegates at the conference.

Delegation Goals
SFU's COP 28 delegation will focus on the following goals and themes.
Goals:
1. Building global partnerships to accelerate climate action, climate justice, the path to net zero, decarbonization, and fulfilling climate commitments.
2. Driving conversation, information sharing, learning, and action with partners and delegates from the Global South through events and dialogue.
3. Ensuring equity and inclusion are central to discussions and solutions.
Core Themes:
1. Community-centered climate innovation: Facilitating global dialogue and information sharing on research priorities related to community-centered climate innovation, highlighting SFU's work in this area.
2. Climate justice: Encouraging global conversations, dialogue, and partnerships to advance equity, justice, and rights-based climate action.
3. Climate solutions: Facilitating collaboration with researchers and international partners in the climate solutions and innovation space, fostering international partnerships for climate solutions research.
Process and Timeline
The COP 28 planning group, led by SFU's central Sustainability team, will review each application using a decision-making framework based on the following criteria:
1. Context: Assessing the applicant's understanding of climate change, climate justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as their life perspectives that can contribute to the delegation.
2. Engagement: Evaluating the applicant's plan to share their learnings with the SFU and their own communities, with a focus on reaching underrepresented groups in international climate negotiations. Considering existing relationships or partnerships that can be developed at COP.
3. Inspiration: Gauging the applicant's commitment to advancing the goals of SFU's COP delegation through their individual inspirations, skills, and motivations.
The call for applications will be open from Tuesday, May 23, and close on Thursday, June 15 (11:59 PM). The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) typically announces the number of badges for each observer organization in July/August (exact dates and deadlines are currently unavailable).
The central SFU Sustainability team will provide support to selected delegates, including preparing for the conference, organizing pre-departure community engagement events, arranging speaking and moderation opportunities at COP, providing training and learning support for students, and assisting with travel arrangements.
