Karibu’s African grantmaking initiative, officially launched in 2025, is a participatory and Africa-led funding program born from a three-year pilot that successfully shifted decision-making power to African grassroots movements. Updates on the program will be shared on this page in the coming months.

At its core is a group of African activists and civil society leaders who are keen to support bold and imaginative efforts that challenge deeply rooted systems of injustice across the continent and globally. They’re seeking to fund groups with radical and forward-thinking ideas—what they call constructive troublemaking—that aim to bring about lasting change.

Who They're Looking to Support

This opportunity is for groups that are actively working to reshape social realities in Africa. This includes:

• Social movements
• Networks
• Community-based organizations
• Cooperatives
• Collectives
• Associations working within wider movement ecosystems

The focus is on initiatives that tackle complex crises—from economic injustice to socio-cultural inequality, political exclusion, and environmental degradation. Projects should be systemic in nature, seeing these crises as interconnected and rooted in broader structures of power.

What Will Not Be Funded

The program does not support:

• Profit-driven or commercial ventures
• Government-led programs
• Building or infrastructure projects
• Emergency aid (e.g., food distribution, hygiene kits, etc.)
• Large-scale equipment or capital purchases
• Individual academic scholarships
