Apply for the Mastercard Foundation/University of Cambridge Climate Resilience and Sustainability Research Fund
Applications are currently being invited for the Mastercard Foundation–University of Cambridge Climate Resilience and Sustainability Research Fund. This joint initiative between the Mastercard Foundation and the University of Cambridge is designed to stimulate new partnerships and reinforce existing research collaborations between scholars based in Africa and those at Cambridge, while also supporting robust and high-quality training activities. The funding prioritises research that addresses issues related to climate resilience and sustainability.
The thematic scope of the fund is intentionally flexible, provided that applicants can clearly demonstrate and justify how their proposed research contributes to climate resilience and sustainability objectives. Funding is awarded to collaborative research teams made up of two principal investigators at post-doctoral level or above, or those with comparable professional experience. Each team must consist of one researcher affiliated with an African university or research institution and one researcher from the University of Cambridge.
Under the current call, applicants may apply either for a Research Catalyst Grant with a maximum value of £20,000 or for a Workshop Grant of up to £50,000. The funding does not extend to principal investigator salaries, institutional overheads, or administrative costs related to grant management.
Applications must be submitted through an online, saveable application form available on the Cambridge-Africa website and completed by the Cambridge-based principal investigator. A complete submission is required to include a detailed justification of the proposed work and collaboration approach, a fully itemised budget using the provided template, and a non-technical summary written for a general audience. In addition, institutional endorsement letters are required from both the Cambridge-based and Africa-based principal investigators’ departments or faculties, with official emails accepted in place of formal letters. Curriculum vitae of no more than two pages for each principal investigator must also be included as part of the final application.
