Program Benefits

APNI will award up to five fellowships valued at USD $5,000 each to successful applicants. The funding is intended to support research activities, travel, scientific collaboration, data analysis, and other academic activities related to phosphorus management research in African agro-ecosystems.

The fellowship provides recipients with opportunities to strengthen their research capacity, increase scientific visibility, and contribute to agricultural innovation and sustainable food production across Africa. Fellows also gain exposure to a broader network of agricultural scientists and institutions working on plant nutrition and soil fertility improvement.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be full-time scientists working at an African National Agricultural Research and Extension System (NARES) institution or an African university. Scientists holding postdoctoral positions are also eligible to apply. Candidates must have already completed their PhD programme before submitting an application.

Applicants are expected to submit an original and innovative proposal focused on improving phosphorus management in African agricultural systems. Proposals may include new research, data synthesis, field studies, or travel activities that contribute to better understanding phosphorus behaviour in soils, water, or plants. Evidence of institutional collaboration and scientific partnerships will strengthen applications, and female scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

To complete the application process, candidates must submit a detailed proposal, two signed recommendation letters including one from their supervisor, a professional résumé, and supporting research information through the official online application portal. Applications may be submitted in either English or French.
