FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the DAAD/EPOS MSc Environmental Governance (MEG) Scholarship at the University of Freiburg

Applications are open for the DAAD/EPOS Scholarship for the Master of Science in Environmental Governance (MEG) at the University of Freiburg in Germany. This prestigious scholarship is designed for outstanding young professionals from developing countries who are committed to advancing sustainable development through environmental governance. The two-year master’s programme equips participants with interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills to address global environmental challenges, policy development, natural resource management, climate change, and sustainable governance.

The scholarship is offered under the DAAD’s EPOS (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses) programme and provides selected candidates with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in Germany while gaining international experience. Candidates are first selected by the MEG programme before their nomination is reviewed and approved by DAAD. The application for the scholarship and admission to the programme are combined into one application process.

The DAAD/EPOS Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support for successful applicants. Scholarship recipients receive a monthly living stipend, health insurance coverage, travel support where applicable, and additional allowances according to DAAD regulations. The scholarship also exempts recipients from paying the University’s tuition fees charged to non-EU students.

Beyond financial support, scholars benefit from studying at one of Germany’s leading universities, engaging with an international learning environment, building professional networks, and acquiring advanced knowledge and practical skills that can contribute to sustainable development in their home countries after graduation.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be citizens of developing countries listed under the DAAD DAC country list. They should hold a bachelor’s degree that is no more than six years old at the time of application and must have graduated with above-average academic performance, generally within the top third of their class. In addition, applicants are required to have at least two years of relevant full-time professional work experience obtained after completing their bachelor’s degree. Internships and voluntary work are not considered eligible professional experience.

Applicants should not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months before applying. Those who already possess a master’s degree may still apply but must provide a strong justification explaining why an additional postgraduate qualification is necessary for their professional goals. Candidates must also satisfy the admission requirements for the MSc Environmental Governance programme, including proof of English language proficiency through accepted tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge C1, or PTE Academic, unless they qualify for an exemption.
Eligible Countries
The scholarship is open to applicants from developing countries included on the DAAD DAC country list. This includes eligible applicants from many countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and other developing regions. Uganda and many other African countries are eligible to apply.
