FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the inaugural training of the : BUILD PHED Leadership Program

BUILD PROJECT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IN INTEGRATED POPULATION, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT & DEVELOPMENT (PHED)
**November 20 ‒ December 1, 2023, Kenya**

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Building Capacity for Integrated Family Planning (FP) and Reproductive Health (RH) and Population, Environment, and Development (PED) Action (BUILD) is a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The BUILD project, led by the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) in partnership with Leadership for Environment and Development Southern and Eastern Africa (LEAD SEA), PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. (PFPI), FHI 360, and Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), is a global initiative designed to harness the interconnections of Population, Health, Environment, and Development (PHED). It aims to stimulate strong political commitment, sustainable financial resources, and accountability for voluntary family planning and reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries.

The BUILD project is launching a global PHED Leadership Program to cultivate the next generation of PHED leaders, with a particular focus on women and young individuals. The program will recruit participants from four regions and provide training to various cohorts in the project’s hub countries: Kenya (East Africa region), Malawi (Southern Africa region), Cote d’Ivoire (West Africa region), and the Philippines (Asia Pacific region). The program's target audience includes young people, especially women, from government, local, national, regional, and international agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), the private sector, or individuals with the potential to execute and/or support PHED-related initiatives.

The inaugural and pilot training session will take place in Kenya in November 2023, specifically for the East Africa region. The program intends to admit around 20 participants, including advocates, community leaders, social influencers, program and project officers, planners, policy influencers, and policymakers from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The BUILD project invites applications for the November 2023 cohort of this inaugural program. The program kicks off with a 12-day in-person training event in Kenya and continues for 12 months with virtual, periodic follow-up sessions. These sessions aim to equip participants with cross-sectoral skills and knowledge necessary for advocating, planning, and implementing integrated programs that address interconnected development goals.

**MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS**
Applicants should:
- Be aged between 18 and 29.
- Have proficiency in English.
- Be citizens of Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania.
- Possess at least a high school degree from a recognized institution or equivalent relevant qualifications (e.g., applicable work experience).
- Preferably have experience in cross-sectoral programming or planning, analytical skills, and knowledge of computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs Editors Office suite).

A panel of PHED, gender, and youth experts will review applications and select candidates who demonstrate genuine interest and have taken steps towards pursuing a professional path in gender, environment, health, family planning, and/or community development sectors.

**PROGRAM DURATION**
The initial training spans 12 days, with a multi-day site visit to a PHED project(s). These activities will take place from November 20 to December 1, 2023, with check-in on the evening of November 19. During this training period, participants will identify a PHED-related opportunity/challenge linked to FP/RH and apply the lessons they've learned over a 12-month period. They will also receive ongoing virtual support from PHED subject matter experts, peers, and mentors/supervisors.

**LOCATION**
The initial training will be conducted in-person in Kenya (outside Nairobi), while periodic follow-up sessions will be held online.

**PROGRAM CONTENT**
The initial training will comprise modules covering an in-depth introduction to "P" – "H" – "E" and "D" and the integrated PHED approach within the broader sustainable development context. Additional leadership modules will focus on systems thinking, strategic communication with policymakers, policy advocacy, gender and youth integration, entrepreneurship, scaling-up methodologies for program sustainability, and more. Participants are encouraged to bring background information from their own multi-sectoral projects or portfolios with a clear FP/RH connection to share with fellow participants and apply lessons from the training and field visits to their specific cases.
