FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS Scholarship) Programme 2025

Applications are now open for the 2025 cohort of the MINDS Scholarship Programme, a transformative opportunity designed for African students who wish to pursue postgraduate education in a country within Africa other than their own. This initiative supports regional academic mobility and encourages cultural exchange, providing scholars with the chance to experience the diverse social, political, and economic environments found across the continent. By fostering academic excellence and leadership, the programme aims to strengthen the integration of Africa through a network of forward-thinking individuals committed to driving sustainable growth and cooperation across borders.

The MINDS Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership potential. To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of an African nation and living within the continent. Candidates must have secured admission into a postgraduate program—either an Honours or Master’s degree—at one of the recognized MINDS partner universities located outside their country of origin or residence. Applicants are expected to have achieved an academic average of at least 70% in each course or subject over their last two years of study. Furthermore, they must show clear evidence of leadership ability or promise, as outlined in the application requirements.

This prestigious scholarship is tailored for individuals who are passionate about the continent’s progress and are determined to influence change from within. The scholarship supports full-time postgraduate study lasting one or two years, depending on the program and degree level. MINDS does not restrict applicants to any specific academic discipline, giving them the freedom to pursue fields that align with their passions and aspirations. Along with academic funding, the scholarship package may include tuition coverage, accommodation and meal allowances, a stipend, and one return flight for the duration of the study program.

The MINDS Scholarship Programme is anchored in the belief that empowering young African leaders with education and exposure beyond their home countries contributes significantly to building a united and prosperous Africa. As part of its commitment, MINDS partners with a select group of leading institutions across East, West, North, and Southern Africa. These include renowned universities such as the University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, Makerere University in Uganda, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, and Al Akhawayn University in Morocco, among others.

Individuals who are driven by a Pan-African vision, have a strong academic background, and demonstrate leadership potential are encouraged to submit their applications. This scholarship does more than just fund education—it cultivates a new generation of changemakers equipped to address Africa’s challenges and shape a future of collaboration, innovation, and inclusive development across the continent.
