Applications are open for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa 2027, one of the world’s most competitive and respected postgraduate scholarship programs. The scholarship enables exceptional young leaders from West Africa to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom while joining a global network of scholars dedicated to leadership, service, academic excellence, and positive social impact. Each year, three Rhodes Scholarships are awarded to outstanding candidates from eligible West African countries under the West Africa constituency.

Program Benefits
The Rhodes Scholarship is fully funded and covers all University of Oxford tuition fees for the approved course of study. Scholars receive a generous annual stipend to support accommodation, meals, and other living expenses while studying in the United Kingdom. The scholarship also covers the Oxford application fee, the UK Immigration Health Surcharge, and economy-class travel to and from the United Kingdom at the beginning and end of the scholarship period. Additional funding opportunities may be available for research activities, conferences, and fieldwork.

Beyond financial support, Rhodes Scholars become part of a lifelong international community of leaders, researchers, innovators, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and social impact professionals. Scholars gain access to leadership development programs, mentorship opportunities, networking events, and a powerful global alumni network.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be citizens of one of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe, or Togo. Candidates must also have been resident in one or more of these countries for at least five of the last ten years.

Applicants must meet one of the age criteria for the 2027 intake. Generally, candidates should be aged between 18 and 24 years on 1 October 2026. Extended age eligibility applies to certain professional degree holders and candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual, provided they meet the specific conditions outlined by the Rhodes Trust.

Candidates must have completed, or be expected to complete, an undergraduate degree by the application deadline and possess an outstanding academic record equivalent to a First Class Honours degree. The academic achievement should meet or exceed the admission requirements for the applicant’s chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford. Applicants must also satisfy Oxford University’s English language requirements or qualify for an approved waiver.
