Applications are open for the United Nations–Nippon Foundation Strategic Needs Fellowship 2026, a prestigious fully funded programme designed to strengthen the capacity of government officials from developing countries in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea. Administered by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) with support from the Nippon Foundation, the fellowship equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to implement international legal frameworks, strengthen ocean governance, promote sustainable development, and address emerging challenges such as climate change, marine conservation, maritime security, and the sustainable blue economy.

The fellowship combines advanced academic research with practical training at leading host institutions around the world. Participants undertake specialized research that directly contributes to the formulation and implementation of ocean-related policies and programmes in their home countries while building lasting professional networks with international experts.
