Applications are open for the University of Michigan African Faculty Fellowship 2027. The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science African Faculty Fellows Program supports outstanding researchers based at African universities and research institutions who are interested in applying artificial intelligence methodologies to solve significant scientific and engineering challenges. Fellows will spend one year at the University of Michigan in the United States and another year at their home institution in Africa, building sustainable research collaborations and advancing AI-driven innovation across the continent. The fellowship is designed to support early- and mid-career faculty members whose work aligns with areas such as engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, earth and environmental sciences, and selected biological sciences. During the program, fellows will participate in AI training opportunities, collaborative research activities, and professional development initiatives while working closely with University of Michigan faculty hosts. The program also aims to strengthen AI in Science capacity across Africa by supporting long-term institutional and regional impact. (Midas)

Program Benefits

Selected fellows will receive an annual stipend of USD 35,000 during their residency at the University of Michigan, comprehensive medical insurance, free housing, visa fees, and travel costs between Africa and the United States. In addition, the program covers the costs of computers, software licenses, conference travel, publication fees, and selected training workshops. After returning to Africa, fellows will receive a USD 50,000 pilot grant to implement their research, training, and impact plans at their home institutions. The fellowship also provides funding of USD 40,000 to support collaborative research projects between fellows and their University of Michigan faculty hosts. (Midas)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a primary appointment as a faculty member at an African university or occupy an equivalent research position within an African research organization. Candidates must possess a PhD before July 1, 2027, and should be considered early- or mid-career researchers, meaning their PhD award date or first faculty appointment began on or after July 1, 2017. While applicants may come from any academic background, their proposed project must focus on the application of AI methodologies to significant scientific or engineering questions. Previous collaboration with a University of Michigan faculty member is not required, although securing a faculty host can strengthen an application and guarantees advancement to the second application phase.
